DEUTZ Presents Sustainable Drive Technology at CONEXPO

DEUTZ will be presenting its latest developments in the field of sustainable drive systems at the CONEXPO construction equipment fair in Las Vegas. Under the banner of ‘We ensure the world keeps moving’, the drive specialist is combining diesel, gas, electric, and hydrogen technologies to create the best possible solution for every customer.

DEUTZ will be showcasing the TCG 7.8 H2 hydrogen engine at CONEXPO, with full production of the engine expected to begin as early as next year. The six-cylinder engine is based on an existing design, and despite producing 220 kW of power is both carbon-neutral and very quiet. In principle, the hydrogen engine can be used in all current DEUTZ applications, and even in the on-highway segment. After initially being piloted in a genset for generating electricity, the engine will now be trialed in an 18-tonne truck as part of the HyCET project.

Also on show from the Green segment will be the drive specialist’s PowerTree mobile charging system, which can be used in the absence of any power infrastructure. The PowerTree won the Diesel Progress Summit Award in the category ‘Electric or Hybrid Application of the Year’ in 2022. DEUTZ will now be presenting the next generation of the product.

The DEUTZ PowerTree enables charging of e-motors, even away from existing grid infrastructure.

The latest version offers attractive features for DEUTZ customers, including an improved design that makes the 10-foot container easier to transport. It is now also possible to scale the battery capacity, allowing for optimal adaptation to the customer’s technical and commercial requirements.

Our objective is to make the move to becoming carbon-neutral as simple, secure, and cost-efficient as possible for our customers. DEUTZ’s compact 400-volt electric drive system, which uses a split drive comprising two 40 kW electric motors, will also feature. As is typical for electric engines, the system delivers instant torque, making the machine even more dynamic. The battery is from the Company’s own modular toolbox and offers 42 kWh of capacity. The 22 kW rapid charging system can restore the battery charge to 80 percent within an hour. The ISO 26262-certified system has a peak output of 80 kW. The G5-18A telehandler concept vehicle is equipped with this drive, enabling it to be used for five hours before it needs recharging again.

The compact 400-volt E-drive system has a peak power of 80 kW.

There are also new products in the conventional engine segment. DEUTZ firmly believes that the construction sector will continue to need efficient internal combustion engines to ensure a seamless transition to the technologies of the future.

The TCD 3.9 engine in the sub-4 liter category, a joint development with John Deere Power Systems, will have its US premiere during the event. Visitors can watch the engine, which is available with an output of up to 130 kW, showcase its reliability, versatility, and power. It is suitable for all industrial applications, and thanks to its cutting-edge drive architecture, can be made available in variants fueled by lower-emission alternatives such as gas and hydrogen.

The high-performance DEUTZ TCD 5.2 engine is also set for its US premiere at CONEXPO, and will be available on the market from the third quarter of 2023. Featuring a power range up to 170 kW and maximum torque of 950 Nm, the engine combines the power of six cylinders with the efficiency of four, providing the flexibility needed for a wide range of industrial applications. The engine meets the world’s most stringent emissions standards, EU Stage V, US Tier 4f, and China CN4, and is already approved for use with HVO.

The DEUTZ G 2.9, a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) version of the successful TCD 2.9 fourcylinder engine (30–75 kW), will also feature at CONEXPO. This robust, water-cooled fourcylinder engine offers up to 54.5 kW of power and maximum torque of 210 Nm. The gas engine is ideally suited to low-load applications in the material handling and compact construction equipment field.

In the next few years, we will therefore not only enhance our climate-neutral product portfolio but also further expand our classic engine business.”

Participating in CONEXPO underlines the great relevance of the American market for DEUTZ. The Americas region accounts for a good 20 percent of group sales and has grown by more than 40 percent per year since 2020. This goes hand in hand with the expansion of the own regional service network. The powertrain specialist intends to further increase the current number of eight DEUTZ Power Centers (DPC) this year.
