Hitachi Increases R&D Spending to 2.7% to Meet Digital and Sustainable Demands

Hitachi Construction Machinery has ramped up its investment in research and development to address the growing demand for digitalisation, decarbonization, and the evolving needs of the construction equipment market.

The growing demands for digitalisation and ecological sustainability, among other industry trends, are driving the need for greater innovation and more rapid technological advancements. That’s why HCM raised its R&D investment from 2.2% of total sales in 2023 to 2.7% in 2024 (as Construction Briefing’s ‘How much do the world’s biggest OEMs spend on R&D’ reports), reflecting a strategic push toward future-ready solutions.

In line with this, in 2024 Hitachi Construction Machinery launched the LANDCROS concept, a strategic shift that marks the company’s ambition to move beyond machine manufacturing and deliver integrated solutions throughout the entire equipment life cycle. HCM considers the transition from ownership to usage and increasing environmental awareness within the sector. It also recognises the need for high-quality, high-performance machinery, as well as solutions for optimised operation throughout a machine’s life cycle.

“LANDCROS One is more than just a machine. It’s our commitment to deliver solutions beyond machinery in a new construction ecosystem. We’re proud to lead the new wave of innovation, empowering the next-generation workforce and redefining possibilities in the construction machinery industry.”

Said HCME President and CEO Francesco Quaranta.

Developed in partnership with design firm Granstudio, the machine reflects Hitachi’s vision for a construction sector that is smarter, safer, and more sustainable.
