[Job Story] Bodarwé, Liebherr and SOMTP: a Decades-Long Partnership Between Quarries and Job Sites

Bodarwé, a company with expertise in road construction, quarries, asphalt, concrete, prefabrication, and recycling, has been relying on Liebherr machines and collaborating with dealer SOMTP for a decade.

In eastern Belgium, the family-owned company Bodarwé has been operating for almost 90 years. Founded in 1937 by Jean Bodarwé, great-grandfather of the current directors, the business has grown while keeping a strong connection to its region and its people. For quarry operations and earthmoving sites, the company relies on a comprehensive Liebherr fleet. Today, the company has more than 250 employees and focuses on shared values and teamwork.

Throughout this journey, two names return consistently: Liebherr and SOMTP, suppliers that have always played a key role.

From the R 900 to mining: a choice that began in 1989

Bodarwé’s first Liebherr purchase was the R 900 crawler excavator in 1989. This marked the start of a close collaboration that has grown stronger over time. In 1999, for the Waimes quarries in Belgium, Bodarwé bought an R 984, later replaced in 2019 by a Liebherr R 9100 mining excavator.

“Liebherr is a supplier with a broad and comprehensive product range that fits in perfectly with our various fields of activity. (…) The partnership with SOMTP is also of crucial importance. Together with Liebherr, we always find suitable solutions.”

Said Jean Bodarwé, company director and representative of the fourth generation.

28 Liebherr units in service at Bodarwé

Bodarwé operates 400 machines and vehicles of all brands, a large fleet that has a direct impact on maintenance and operational management. Within this fleet, 28 machines are Liebherr: 14 wheeled excavators, eight crawler excavators and six wheel loaders, all valued for both performance and ease of maintenance.

Liebherr machines are used across all Bodarwé activities, from quarry extraction and earthmoving to roadworks in confined spaces.

“The easy maintenance and monitoring of Liebherr machines is also an important factor that enables us to ensure the success of our teams on the construction sites”

Explained Roger Bungart, machinery manager at Bodarwé.

Among the machines in operation, the R 938 crawler excavator works in a quarry used by the company, a particularly demanding environment for a model that is also used in earthmoving. It is a 40-tonne excavator developed and produced at Liebherr-France SAS in Colmar, presented as an example of versatility and robustness across different applications.

The technical basis highlighted is the power-split travel drive fitted as standard on the XPower range: an automatic, infinitely variable system that combines the advantages of hydrostatic and mechanical drive, with the aim of delivering high performance and reduced fuel consumption.

A company culture that puts people first

“Respect for our employees is at the centre of everything we do. It is the guarantee of high-quality work in a healthy and familiar environment. The pleasure of working together is of central importance.”

Said Stéphane Bodarwé, Jean’s cousin and also a company director.

Founded in 1937, Bodarwé first built its reputation in road construction and quarry operations, later diversifying over time. The creation of Boreta in 1964, with the production and laying of bituminous paving, marked an important milestone in the company’s history. In the 1980s, Bodarwé saw further growth with activities in concrete and prefabricated construction.

Today, Bodarwé has eight subsidiaries.
