Manitowoc has launched Potain Power Solutions, a range of energy storage systems designed to provide stable power for tower cranes on complex jobsites, reducing reliance on generators through integrated energy management.
The units are intended to power tower cranes and limit the use of generators or unstable local power grids. They can be used on off-grid jobsites, remote projects and urban construction sites, where reducing noise and emissions is becoming an increasingly important operational requirement.
The systems address the typical workloads of tower cranes, where lifting operations can require high power peaks. Compared with standard batteries, Potain Power Solutions is designed to support more intensive and continuous duty cycles.
The range is aimed at markets in Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, India, Africa, Latin America and other emerging regions. Available configurations include 135 kVA and 270 kVA units, as well as solutions exceeding 375 kVA. The systems are compatible with several Potain tower cranes, from entry-level models to larger specialised cranes, and can also power other jobsite equipment.
During lifting operations, the systems manage high discharge rates and current peaks, helping maintain lifting capacity and operating speeds without voltage drops or power interruptions. They also integrate grid stabilisation and UPS functions, which help protect the crane’s electronics in the event of unstable power supply or blackouts.
Potain Power Solutions uses liquid cooling to keep battery operation stable even in hot and humid conditions. The structure is designed for forklift handling and to withstand vibration, impacts and the stresses linked to transport and jobsite relocation.
The compact format makes it easier to transport and reposition the systems between different job sites. Integrated energy management can reduce fuel consumption by up to 70% compared with traditional diesel generators; in fully electric mode, the generator can be excluded entirely. Quieter operation and the absence of local emissions make these solutions suitable for urban job sites subject to environmental and noise limits.
