The Australian mapping company is turning the navigation stack behind Hovermap into a platform other robot and vehicle makers can license
Emesent, the Australian autonomous mapping and robotics company spun out of CSIRO in 2018, has been awarded a $2 million grant from the Australian Government’s Cooperative Research Centres Projects programme to develop Cortex AI, an open platform that lets any robot or vehicle navigate and map where there is no GPS signal.
That matters more than the sum involved, because of what it changes about the company. Emesent has sold finished products, the Hovermap and GX1 scanners, deployed in more than 50 countries. Cortex AI turns the hard part underneath those products into something other manufacturers can buy.
The problem it addresses
Underground mines, building interiors, tunnels and contested military environments have one thing in common: no satellite signal. Almost every automation system in use either lacks real autonomy or depends on GPS, which means it stops working precisely where the difficult and dangerous work happens.
Building GPS-denied navigation from scratch, Emesent says, typically takes five or more years and several million dollars of development. For a manufacturer of underground loaders, drilling rigs or inspection robots, that is the barrier that keeps autonomy on the roadmap rather than in the product.
What is being built
The project is worth $5.1 million in total and is led by Emesent with the Queensland University of Technology and EPE, an Australian robotics supplier. It combines Emesent’s navigation, rebuilt as modular APIs, with QUT’s work on scene understanding and validation through EPE’s field robotics.
The platform is hardware-agnostic, covering aerial and ground robots as well as vehicle automation, and is offered through layered APIs and SDKs so an integrator can take as much or as little as it needs.
“Emesent’s vision is to be world leaders in autonomous digitization of the most challenging and unreachable places on earth. That starts with robots that can navigate and sense autonomously, without GPS, on any platform,” said Dr Farid Kendoul, chief technology officer and co-founder.
The business model underneath
There is a second mechanism worth noticing. Every Cortex-powered system in the field feeds data into Aura Cloud, Emesent’s processing and visualisation platform, which the company says improves the product for every user. That is a platform strategy: licence the autonomy, and the data returns.
A working prototype is already deployed with more than a dozen early adopters across defence, mining and the built environment, integrated into drones, ground robots and heavy vehicles.
For mining companies, the practical question is timing. If autonomy stops being something each equipment maker builds alone, the pace at which underground machines gain it depends less on any single OEM’s R&D budget. What the announcement does not give is a commercial availability date, pricing, or which manufacturers are among those early adopters.
