Where Batteries Meet Deep Cold and Steep Slopes: Scania Signs Long-Term Deal With Prinoth

Core 800 battery packs will power both the Husky E-Motion and the newly introduced Leitwolf E-Motion snow groomers

Few off-highway machines test a battery harder than a snow groomer. It works in very low temperatures, on steep terrain, moving heavy volumes of snow and shaking its power pack all the while. Scania has now signed a long-term agreement with Italian manufacturer Prinoth, part of HTI Group, to supply batteries for exactly that duty.

From first machine to long-term partnership

The collaboration began with the Husky E-Motion, introduced in 2022 and described as the world’s first market-ready fully electric snow groomer. Since launch it has been deployed in Norway, France, Italy, the UK and the United States, and it has used Scania’s Core 800 battery since 2023.

The deal expands to the Leitwolf E-Motion, recently introduced by Prinoth. It carries Core 800 packs in top and side orientation, configured for higher energy and power needs.

The battery

The Core 800 is a lithium-ion pack with 97 kWh of installed energy and high energy density. Its modular design allows systems from 21 kWh up to 624 kWh. It features integrated liquid cooling, an advanced safety architecture and a proprietary Battery Management System.

“Snow groomers operate in very low temperatures and steep terrain, moving heavy volumes of snow. This requires batteries that can deliver high power, withstand cold climates, and handle vibrations,” said Elin Åkerström, Managing Director, Scania Industrial Batteries. Roberto Pegoraro, Head of R&D Snow Groomers at Prinoth, said the company continued with Scania because of the quality of its battery systems, tested in some of the most challenging environmental conditions.

What it means

For Scania, the deal strengthens its role as an electrification supplier beyond trucks: its industrial batteries are already used in mining, construction, agriculture, logistics vehicles, energy storage and airport ground support equipment. For machine builders and resort operators, a long-term supply agreement gives a clearer path to scaling electric groomers, although the release gives no volumes or delivery dates.
