The Results of the Joint Project by DAF, Faun, and Paul for an Ultra-Compact Chassis

A special joint project by DAF Trucks, the Allers dealer, Paul specialty vehicle builder, and the body specialist Faun reached its preliminary climax at the end of last year with the delivery of three ultra-compact sweepers to Entsorgungsgesellschaft Niederrhein (EGN). On the premises of the DAF dealer in Krefeld, the project team handed over the road sweepers, which started working at various locations on the left Lower Rhine in December 2020.

“I am very proud of what we have achieved today,” explains Klaus Engels, long-standing sales manager at the German-Dutch DAF sales partner Allers.

“Mainly because with these truck sweepers we are proving that we can not only build semitrailer tractors, but are also able to implement highly complex industry solutions together with our construction partners.”

The outstanding properties of the LF and its ultra-compact 4×2 chassis with a body-friendly chassis contribute significantly to its success.

Ultra-compact and extremely manoeuvrable

The three DAF LFs, each with a 230 HP PACCAR PX-7 Euro 6 drive unit, were perfectly matched to use in the narrow streets and alleys of the metropolitan areas together with the municipal experts from Faun and the vehicle manufacturer Paul. The long-established company Paul from Vilshofen supplied the corresponding auxiliary drive (sandwich PTO), while Faun contributed its proven VIAJET structure with a patented air circulation system. The combination with an unbeatable short wheelbase of only 3260 mm and a turning circle of only 12.5 meters (from wall to wall) left a lasting impression on the customer. Both are considered unrivaled on the market. Andreas Germann, workshop manager at EGN in Viersen, was personally impressed by the positive properties of the three nippy and clean sweeps:

“The inner cities are becoming ever narrower, The requirements for truck-mounted sweepers in inner-city operation are changing accordingly. They have to offer an optimal compromise between maneuverability, clarity, payload and efficiency, ”says Germann.

“DAF was the only manufacturer who, in cooperation with the specialists Paul and Faun, was able to specify the road sweepers according to our special requirements. The three municipal vehicles will be in use at various locations in our regional area from December – another vehicle on the more spacious CF base is already under construction. ”

Like gears that mesh

The success of the project for waste disposal on the Lower Rhine was also guaranteed by the professional coordination between the ultra-compact DAF chassis, the special auxiliary drive from Paul, and the body components from Faun.

“The parameterization of the vehicle made it extremely easy for us to mount our proven VIA-JET 6 with hydraulic turbine drive on the DAF-LF chassis,” explains design manager Mario Thieme from Faun.

“As the market leader, we know this segment very well and we really appreciate it when the cooperation runs as smoothly as if gears mesh with one another. With its narrow cab, the curb window on the left, its extreme maneuverability, and the NMV power take-off from Paul, the LF 4×2 is the perfect commercial vehicle for this type of job.”

“Blue Angel” environmental certification

“The configuration of the three almost identical DAF LF 230 FA (4×2) is really predestined for the construction of an environmentally friendly municipal vehicle,” explains Mario Thieme. “The vehicle with the VIAJET-6 body can be environmentally certified with little effort.” Thieme aims for certification of the Blue Angel, which also provides a standard for municipal vehicles. The strict criteria apply not only to truck-mounted sweepers, but also to self-driving sweepers and refuse collection vehicles. In doing so, they must have low noise emissions, a reduction in exhaust gas and particles at Euro 6 level, and also have a “low-emission” vehicle and bodywork paint. “With just a few adjustments, the vehicles can be certified with the Blue Angel eco-label,” Thieme continues.

EGN Entsorgungsgesellschaft Niederrhein operates a 4-brand vehicle fleet. Depending on the needs and the special requirements, EGN uses the respective chassis supplier.
