The Latest Merlo Innovations Arrive at Samoter

From the award-winning 30.7 compact lift to the new range of Roto rotary machines, passing through increasingly efficient and sustainable dump trucks and e-WORKER 2WDs, the stand of the Cuneo company (hall 8, stand F5 – G7) tells the evolution of top-of-the-range models to meet market needs.

At Samoter 2023, the International Construction Machinery Exhibition scheduled at the Verona fair from 3 to 7 May, Merlo brings important innovations, always in the wake of the motto ‘Innovation within tradition’ which has characterized the history of the Cuneo company since its birth, over a century ago.

The most awarded

In the Merlo stand (hall 8, stand: F5-G7), the 30.7 will obviously be on display, the telescopic handler fresh from the recognition of the SaMoTer Innovation Award. The 30.7 won in the Compact Telehandler category for «the original and functional solution concerning safety and comfort». The 30.7 compact lift was born with the declared aim of wanting to raise the safety standards of its category and for this reason it has been equipped with some systems that make it unique. The active safety control ASCS (Adaptive Stability Control System) ensures perfect prevention of the risk of the machine overturning during the handling phases of a load. The Merlo Active Personnel Safety system, thanks to the wide-angle lens cameras, provides the operator with a view of the side and rear areas with recognition of the presence of people. Among its strong points is the possibility of being equipped with the exclusive Suspended Cabin (CS), patented by Merlo, a technological solution that maximizes comfort and ensures a new safety standard.

New Rotos

However, the new models in the Rotativi range will certainly also have a prominent place. The previous ones already represent a flagship for Merlo but with the new models 50.16 and 50.16S, 50.18 and 50.18S, 50.22S and S Plus and 50.27S and S Plus the goal is to improve the load diagrams and increase performance and functionality, while maintaining compact dimensions and thus responding to a need deeply felt by the market, whether they are renters or construction companies. The Roto models concerned are the compact or medium-capacity ones, whose maximum capacity of the machine is increased to 4,950 kg. Digital monitor and speeds of up to 40 km/h become the basic characteristics. The functionality also improves.

As far as the set-up is concerned, with the Cartesian movements, the combined actuation of the up and down movements with extension and return is entrusted to the machine. The precision of the movements is 20 centimeters in the start-up phase, which reduces to just 10 centimeters in movement. The set-point, or repositioning of the implement, is instead a sequential and polar command which allows the implement to be brought back to a certain memorized position. This feature makes the operator’s work easier and allows him to concentrate on other manoeuvres. As far as dynamic behavior is concerned, the main changes compared to the previous models are the slowing down of the descent of the arm according to the load and the removal of the total block, allowing non-aggravating movements even in the event of a sudden overload (in the previous models the total block was triggered over 104% percentage stability).

New dump trucks

At Samoter Merlo is also offering the new range of dump trucks, whose medium-sized model is probably among the most popular machines on construction sites in Northern Europe. Also in this case the market demand is greater comfort, more safety and better performance. Hence the evolution of the Merlo dumper in the direction of replacing the barrel with a skip, the inclusion of the level 2 FOPS cab, the increase in overall comfort and the increase in payload up to 9 tons. The machine is designed to reduce overall dimensions to a minimum. The high ground clearance also ensures high off-road agility. The 74.4 kW – 100 HP Deutz TCD 3.6 engine guarantees adequate power for every situation. The fully opening hood and a raised platform make inspections and maintenance easy for technicians. The transmission is hydrostatic with EPD electronic control. There is a two-speed 0-14 and 0-40 gearbox with electro-hydraulic control in the cab, characteristics which, in addition to standardizing with other ranges, also translate into lower consumption.

The caisson with a maximum capacity of nine tons is made of Hardox steel for the bottom and high-strength steel for the vertical walls. Offered with two different solutions (fixed rear and trilateral), in order to facilitate unloading, the body reaches a tipping angle of 75 degrees. The cab features a width of 920 mm to ensure maximum comfort. ROPS and FOPS level 2 approved to meet the highest safety standards, the machine can be equipped with an air conditioning system. In order to facilitate all operating phases, the machine is designed to ensure the highest level of visibility. The seat can rotate 180 degrees to allow front driving for road transfers or rear side driving on site. A camera, mounted on the rear axle, projects images into the cab in order to maximize visibility during maneuvers on site.

E-WORKER 2WD

Finally, Merlo finds the right and important space that the e-WORKER 2WD also deserves, the increasingly efficient and sustainable Merlo telescopic handler with fully electric traction. A cutting-edge machine that has received numerous awards since its entry into the market, the e-WORKER has also obtained the prestigious ADI Compasso d’Oro, the oldest and most authoritative world design award, as “well characterized by advanced and culturally aware planning, ethically responsible towards the individual, society and the environment, and a driving force behind new material and immaterial qualities». The new 2WD models are equipped with two electric motors mounted directly on the front wheel reduction gears, which ensure front-wheel drive and the possibility of modulating the power required for transfers – a solution that guarantees maximum machine autonomy. The steering of the e-WORKER 2WD, on the other hand, takes place only on the rear wheels, in a similar way to what happens with forklifts. All e-WORKER models, unique on the market, can be set up with homologation for road traffic, even with towing of small agricultural trailers. The transmission has three modes of use (ECO, POWER and POWER+) based on customer needs. To maximize the efficiency of the machine, this vehicle is equipped with regenerative braking. Thanks to this possibility, unlike a conventional dynamic braking system, the kinetic energy is exploited and transformed into electrical energy stored in the batteries.

The 2WD models have been developed to increase the range of the car. The rear axle is free to oscillate up to 7 degrees, the maximum gradeability is 12% at maximum load. The wheel hubs are made with a steering angle of up to 85°, guaranteeing exceptional manoeuvrability. In this way the car steers practically «on the spot», pivoting on the inside front tyre. The Tac-lock device, standard on all models, ensures maximum operating comfort, allowing hydraulic locking of the implements from the cab. Hooks, excavating shovels, platforms, grapples, forks are some of the innumerable pieces of equipment designed and manufactured in the Merlo’s Group, designed to enhance performance and increase the versatility of the machine in different operating situations. The 100% electric solution makes it possible to drastically reduce the noise emissions of the machine. The cab is ROPS and FOPS certified. All models are equipped with anti-rollover sensors integrated in the rear axle, a solution that guarantees maximum stability without compromising machine performance.

The e-WORKER 2WD is equipped with the e-holder, a system that assists the operator when starting uphill and prevents the vehicle from moving when the accelerator pedal is released on any slope. The e-WORKER 2WD, like all Merlo telehandlers, can be equipped with MERLOMOBILITY, a telematic system that allows you to geolocate the machine, remotely manage the geographical boundaries of operation, evaluate its behaviour, perform diagnoses in real time.
